Episode 32: League 101
In Episode 32, we share a recording of “League 101,” the recent presentation at the monthly member meeting hosted by the League of Women Voters of Amarillo. This conversation is from February 28, 2026 and features Kimberly Anderson, our current president, as moderator. This discussion welcomed the Amarillo League’s past presidents: Jenny Inzerillo and Michelle Hoggatt (co-presidents from 2023-25) and Sonya Letson (2019-2023).
Kimberly Anderson is a lifelong member of the Amarillo community committed to volunteering her time to improve the lives of her neighbors. She has a passion for the power of education, having previously served as an early elementary educator, an elected trustee on the Amarillo ISD School Board, and in various board positions in local PTAS. She currently works as a non-profit professional and volunteers her time as a board member for Elevate Amarillo, Every Texan, and Bonham Middle School PTA. She is a self-described voting enthusiast and has served on the Board of the Amarillo League of Women Voters for five years, currently as President.
Michelle Hoggatt is an Amarillo native. She graduated from Texas Tech and later got her teaching certification from West Texas A & M. Michelle taught English at Bushland Middle School for 29 years. When she retired, she obtained her Volunteer Deputy Registrar certification and later joined the League in order to be able to help register voters. Michelle served on the board as the Social Media manager and a couple of years later Sonya convinced her to take on the Co-Presidency with Jenny Inzerillo. Michelle cares a great deal about voting - both for getting people registered and for helping educate them, so voters can make the best choices for their values. The League provides the best opportunities to do that work.
Jenny Inzerillo served as the Co-President of the League of Women Voters of Amarillo from 2023-2025, alongside Michelle Hoggatt. Her service was prompted by seeing the resilient leadership from Sonya Letson, as well as the dedication of former board members Lou Ann Garrett and Claudia Stravato. "There are so many incredible women involved in this organization, and they're all people who embody the spirit of our rural region: hard work, community support, and encouraging citizens to participate in our democratic process," Jenny says. She stayed on the board as the Publicity Chair, working on the newsletter every month, promoting League events with press releases, and helping to produce and promote the Lone Star Deep Dive podcast. Jenny‘s full-time job as Music Director at High Plains Public Radio takes up most of her waking hours, but she continues to promote the League's mission as a regular VDR and LWV volunteer, encouraging everyone to educate themselves and VOTE. When she's working or volunteering, you can find Jenny combing Craigslist for vintage furniture, reading, painting badly, teaching her cats manners, watching documentaries, working on her vintage camper, gardening, visiting her buddies across the US, and riding her bike to Palo Duro Canyon.
Sonya Letson was born in Houston, Texas. She is currently the Armstrong County Democratic Chair, a party position to which she was elected in March 2026. She was first appointed to this post by the Texas Democratic Party in March 2025. Prior to this, Letson served as the president of the League of Women Voters of Amarillo from 2019 through May 2023.
Letson holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Corrections from Sam Houston State University and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin. She began her law practice in 1982, was an instructor at Amarillo College for several years, and was later elected Potter County Attorney (Amarillo), a position she held from 1993 through 2004. Letson later served ten years as judge of the Amarillo Municipal Court. She retired from active law practice in 2018. Sonya and her husband of 44 years,Tad Fowler, live in Armstrong County.
